Broadband Challenge

How long can you go without television and radio? Using internet as your only source of video

The challenge was successful for me. All week I've avoided television as well as  radio.
Personally, I found that radio wasn't a challenge at all, as I always have my ipod connected in my car and when I do listen to music at home I have my songs downloaded play them through Itunes. Television on the other hand was a bit more difficult for me. Most shows can be viewed online either live through the networks site or at a later date. I typically don't watch much television however, there are certain shows at time that I like gathering with my family and/or friends and watch all together.

In today's world everything can be accessed online however, that doesn't mean I want to. I still rather have my photoshop programs then do it online. At times I rather just sit down and watch television as appose to surfing the internet to find past episodes and wait for them to load. I love the internet for many things, but not everything. As the internet perfects itself and radio as well as television shows will be provided online advertisers will need to adjust their marketing and advertising strategies.

All in all it was a good challenge but I still prefer getting comfy on my couch and watching a show I've been waiting for all week, then waiting to watch it online the next day. As for movies and what not online is great, or even watching old season of How I Met Your Mother, etc... I'm glad the challenge is over though. I look forward to watching American Idol on my television set and using my own photoshop programs and not online applications.

Guerilla Marketing

Advertisers are trying to find new and innovative ways to capture audiences attention. Guerilla marketing is a great way to achieve this, if done right, it is extremely effective as well as cost efficient. Guerilla Marketing not only gets the attention of those who have seen or witnessed it, but it also draws the attention of individuals from different cities, countries, by word of mouth and thanks to the internet. Companies make  drastic statement, using creativity and originality all to capture the publics eye. If one person sees it and found it unique and different, soon they will be telling friends, who will let other friends and so on and so forth.

Some examples of Guerilla Advertising that I'm fond of are:

Mr. Clean
Very simple, yet gets the key message across instantly. This is something if I had come across, I would of differently told a friend or my family about.

Cingular
Again, very clever, doesn't require much reading for people to understand. Not for typical cellphone company advertising. I love they way the literally dropped the word "calls". As you also see, people are taking pictures of this ad because it's original. As an advertiser this is what you want people doing because you then know that this particular ad stands out amongst the rest and has been imprinted into those peoples minds.

Pond's
Not your typical boring billboard ad or typical boring face wash ad with a close up of a girls face.
Fun way to make this product memorable.

KitKat
Again, this type of advertising is much more likely to get noticed then and ad in a magazine.

Online Advertising

Upon talking about online advertising in our Trends in Advertising class I couldn't agree more, that today more then ever before companies are looking to join the online world. The fact of the matter is that online advertising, at least effective online advertising, isn't executed all that well. Traditional advertising such as Newspaper, Television are intrusive media which demand attention. A commercial can't be avoided you are focused to view them. However, with the internet consumers can chose to never visit a site again. They have much more control and with that control, advertisers lose their audiences attention, the attention that in past was acquired much more easily. Social networks are booming and now people are gathering information from other people not advertisers, consumers are searching, posting and sharing their opinions and experiences, now purchase decisions are made by another individual recommendations as oppose to companies advertisements.

A lot of companies do not put much effect into researching how to execute online advertising effectively for their business. Opening a Twitter account just for the sake of opening a Twitter because all companies have one, doesn't mean it will do anything for your company. The name of the company is slipping my mind at the moment, but they used a Twitter account effective to post estimated waiting time enabling their clients to view estimated wait times.  Many companies are using online advertising as though it were a traditional media, which it definitely isn't you true have to find something that your target audience wants to know, is interested or create interactive ways to gain your targets attention. Pop ads are just annoying and banner ads are being over looked.

A great way example is the Dove viral video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iYhCn0jf46U
It moved away from your typical banner ad and used YouTube to help promote their brand and send out their company's key message. It got over 12 million views using new fun, interactive ways to get your message across is what companies need to be looking to do in order to create successful online advertising campaigns.
